DAY 76 – CORAL BAY – MONKEY MIA Friday, 16th September
Long drive today. Left Coral Bay just before 9am and drove straight to Canarvon where we shopped for some provisions for our time at Monkey Mia. Of course the psychological trauma of crossing the Tropic of Capricorn was almost too much for Sarah! There were many tears and much gnashing of teeth! But we were headed to Monkey Mia so I figured all would be well. Of course, because you have to drive SOUTH to the Overlander Roadhouse, and then NORTH to Denham and Monkey Mia, we managed to cross back over the magical “warm” line, much to my excitement! Unfortunately, because of Sarah’s inability to decipher the difference between Tooheys Extra Dry (beer) and Tooheys Extra Dry (5 Seeds Cider) which Kevin had requested, we had a slight detour to Denham for the correct liquor!! You should never send a girl on a man’s job!
We arrived to a beautiful welcoming committee of the Patterson and the Tedesco kids meeting us at the gate, leading us to our site, and a beautiful dinner awaiting us cooked by Kevin, Alanna, Laurence and Violet. We have the most beautiful site. We are right on the dunes, 20 metres from the water and ten minutes after we arrived, dolphins swam right past our van. We have set up on the same site as Kevin and Alanna so the kids are in heaven. The sites are huge and there is plenty of room for the two vans and awnings and the tent! We had a lovely night sitting outside while Laurence set up his telescope. We gazed at the craters on the moon and watched the moon shimmer on the still waters of Monkey Mia. Of course, the temperature was SIGNIFICANTLY lower than it has been but really we have absolutely nothing to complain about. Life is VERY good!
