The high water level is where the white rock stops. It was up to this line during the last wet season. |

DAY 48 – FITZROY CROSSING (GEIKIE GORGE) Friday, 19th August
This morning WE SLEPT IN UNTIL 5:45am!!!!!! This is an enormous sleep in for us! It is dark so early and light so early that our entire body clocks have changed! We must be getting slack because it still took us an hour and a half to get ready, but we managed to make the 8AM Geikie Gorge cruise on the Fitzroy River which is run by the Department of Conservation and Environment. The kids got to sit in the front row and we all had a beautiful view of the 360 million year old limestone reef walls of the gorge. It was interesting to see the flood levels in recent years, with the 2002 and 2011 flood levels at 7 metres, which was 2 metres above the information gazebo beside the river. We saw plenty of freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves first thing in the morning, and a beautiful perentie (a type of goanna) crawling up the sandy bank.
We went for a short walk along the sandbar when we got back but even by 9:30am it is very hot so we are having a lazy day today – well, David and I are having a lazy day, the kids are doing their journals and are going to do some homework. Actually, I am having a lazy day. David is recharging the caravan battery, taking the clothes off the line and making lunches. I am just Minister for Communications, typing away on the laptop and writing postcards! We will have a swim in the pool and have a lazy dinner before getting ready for our exciting trip to Broome!!! (David: Sarah calls it a lazy dinner because she didn’t cook it! Expertly grilled meat with 6 different vegetables washed down with a merlot. Fitzroy Crossing has not seen such a high standard of cuisine since they watched the last series of Masterchef).
